Well, it looks like thunderstorms in the morning are in the forecast. We say rain or shine we're at the park...not happy about it, but there ;-) It's going to be a cold one too! So Gregory and I will be there in case we want to make other plans, so come on out and we'll figure it out.

Soap recipe from last MOPS meeting

Here's the soap "recipe" from the last MOPS meeting...

Just take one bar of soap (any kind that you like) and grate it up.

Then add 1/2 cup baking soda and

1/2 cup of Borax (found at Walmart)

Mix together really well.

Use 1/2 of the mix to your laundry (using hot water).

Craft from Jan 9th meeting - Chili Mix in a Jar

At the last MOPS meeting we made Chili Mix in a Jar. Here's a similar recipe.

Chili Mix in a Jar

3 cups dried beans (pink, red, navy or kidney -- sorted). Put into a jar or large bag.
3 Tbsp. mild chili powder
2 Tbsp. dehydrated onions
1 Tbsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. oregano
2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper (optional)

Combine spices and put into a small bag.

Include in your gift basket:
1 8 oz. can tomato sauce
2 14oz. cans diced tomatoes in juice

Label: Wash beans. Put into pot with spices. Cook until done, about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Meanwhile, brown 1 lb. ground beef (if desired), and drain. Add meat to the beans with the tomatoes and sauce. Simmer to blend flavors.

Corn Bread Mix

1 cup yellow corn meal
1 cup flour
1/4 cup sugar (optional)
4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt

Sift together all ingredients and store in a plastic bag, at room temperature.
Makes 1 package.

To use:
Pour package of mix into a bowl. Add 1 egg, 1 cup milk, and 4 Tbsp. softened shortening. Beat until smooth (about 1 minute with egg beater).
Pour batter into a greased 8x8x2 inch baking pan. Bake at 425 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until knife inserted at the center comes out clean.

For muffins:
Fill greased muffin cups 2/3 full with batter. Bake at 425 degrees for 15-20 minutes.

Christmas Ornaments

What you will need:

-Light bulbs (any kind will work, just use your imagine)

-Mod podge (any store craft section will have it)

-Mulberry Paper or Tissue paper (mulberry is better, you can get it on line or at the dollar store)

- A paint brush or sponge brush

- Hot glue gun and glue sticks

- A blow dryer

- Ribbon (Thinner works better)

- And your choice in trimming (floral, mini Christmas items, pine cones...)

- wire cutters (available just about anywhere for real cheap)

- Scissors

- a disposable plate or washable dish

What to do:

1.Start by ripping your paper into pieces (not too small or large).

2.On a small plate pour a small amount of your glue.

3.Using your brush apply a small area of glue to your light bulb. Place a piece of paper on top and smooth it in place with your brush adding more glue on top to completely smooth it into place. Then repeat this, overlapping a small bit till it's completely covered.

4, Using your blow dryer dry your bulb till it's dry or tacky enough to hold.

5. At this step I recommend you add your ribbon so you have something to hang your bulb up with. You can either use the present wrapping style or if that's too hard just tie around the top and make a loop. Or glue a loop onto the back! There are several ways to do this.

6. Decorate! Add as much or as little as you like.

*Idea: Fake greenery is a perfect filler for your decorated bulb. Spray glitter and snow are also great ways to jazz up your ornaments. The small pointy light bulbs are fun to decorate as well.

Kids with help and supervision can also have a great time doing this!

Festive Pumpkin Candles

Festive Pumpkin Candles.

Supplies:

1 pumpkin (fake is best for prolong use)

1 tapered candle

double sided tape

a small plate

a small bowl of small dried beans, ie; lentils, split peas...(larger beans are harder to stick to tape)

dried parsley (oregano, basil...)

leaves

ribbon or raffia

Start by making sure your pumpkin is clean.

If your fake pumpkin has a top stem on it...pull it out gently and then cut a small circle in the top center where the stem once was. Using a pair of scissors hollow a hole through the middle about half way down the pumpkins center.

Cut your tapered candle to fit snugly in the hole you hollowed (about 3-4 inches) If the candle is cut the right length it should stand up nicely and not fall over. Remove candle for now.

Wrap tape around center of pumpkin and remove paper from tape.

Over a plate cover tape with dried beans. Press firmly to make sure the beans stick well to tape.

If there are holes or places the beans won't fill use the dried parsley to fill in those spots.

Add your candle and decorate with leaves and ribbon...

**Great center piece idea: Get different sized candles, real pumpkins, and or squash. Wrap parts with double sided tape and cover with beans. Then arrange in a pleasing center piece. Finish with laying extra beans around the center piece. Guaranteed to be a one of a kind elegant fall arrangement !
